In the midst of a cholera outbreak that has affected the region, the Public Health Chief Officer, Dr. Kevin Osuri, convened a press conference Monday to address concerns regarding the upcoming Madaraka Day event scheduled to take place in Sindo. Assuring the public that the event can proceed safely, Dr. Osuri highlighted the significant progress made in containing the outbreak.

The cholera outbreak was first reported on 17th May, originating from Wadiang'a beach in Sindo. Initially, the number of reported cases and affected individuals was alarmingly high, with 98 people being admitted to the hospital. However, due to prompt treatment and the collaborative efforts of the county government, the situation has significantly improved, with only 15 individuals currently under medical care.

Dr. Osuri emphasized that the success in combating the outbreak was attributed to several key measures implemented by the health authorities. "By ensuring that the health communities are structured despite the outbreak, not releasing wastes into the lakes, using toilets to dispose of human waste, and maintaining clean environments and hand hygiene," he explained.

To address the situation effectively, the Health Department collaborated with the County Commissioner, the Red Cross Society, and the World Health Organization. Their joint efforts aimed to overcome the disease and protect the well-being of the citizens.

As part of their strategy, chlorine tablets were distributed to enhance water treatment and ensure the provision of safe drinking water.

Furthermore, Dr. Kevin Osuri announced that the midwives of Homa Bay County had received their promised two months' salary, as pledged by the governor during her campaign. Additionally, their NHIF fees were covered.

Dr. Osuri encouraged all residents of Homa Bay County to register for NHIF cards and contribute a monthly fee of sh.500 to support their healthcare services. "Before Homa Bay County had a 5% active NHIF coverage, and we aim to increase it to 20% active coverage," he expressed, outlining their goal of achieving 65% coverage in the future.

The comprehensive efforts and dedication of the Health Department and its collaborators demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of the citizens. Dr. Osuri concluded the press conference by highlighting that Homa Bay County is one of the few counties in Kenya with 100% coverage by the community health volunteers, further exemplifying the county's commitment to providing quality healthcare services to its residents.

With the situation under control, the Madaraka Day event in Sindo is set to proceed as planned, allowing citizens to celebrate this important national holiday while taking necessary precautions to maintain their health and well-being.
