HOMA BAY COUNTY TO SET UP ITS FIRST COMMUNITY LIBRARIES.
Homa Bay County through a partnership with Just Be A Child UK will set up two community libraries in May and June 2019. The libraries will be set-up in Ndhiwa (Ndhiwa Town) and Kabondo Kasipul (Mikayi Trading Center) sub counties.
Each of the libraries will contain 14,000 Text Books for all readers from Baby class to University level; 200 Toys for developing children’s psychomotor and affective skills; assorted furniture including chairs and tables as well as beddings for the kids to read and rest.
The Library project will be initiated through the Office of the Governor(Homa Bay), with their management being done by the respective communities through appointed library management committees.
Similar projects have been implemented by Just Be a Child UK in the coastal regions of Kenya, especially in Kilifi and Kwale counties with remarkable impacts on the reading culture, academic performance and behaviour transformation of children in those communities.
The partnership between Homa Bay County government and Just Be a child has been made possible through an initiative by the County Resource Mobilizer Dr. Bonyo Ochieng Richard who’s and also the National Coordinator of the Kenya Youth Initiative(KEYOPI) association.
“I thank Just Be a Child UK for their support to our county because an investment in knowledge pays the best interest,” He said, adding that the County leadership is working to promote a reading culture.
The association is supported by Rotary Club of Grantham Kesteven UK, Trade Aid Trust Fund and Just Be a Child UK among other partners to promote education, learning and training of the Kenyan children and youth.
