Governor Gladys Wanga Officially Opens Refurbished Maternity Unit at HCTRH
Homa Bay County Governor, H.E Gladys Wanga, officially opened the newly renovated maternity wing at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital (HCTRH) on Tuesday.
The KES 8 million refurbishment included enhancements to privacy sections, an increased bed capacity of 40, and two theatre rooms for minor and critical operations.
The governor commended the Department of Health, the facility’s board of directors, and the hospital’s leadership for their efforts in ensuring the completion of the project in record time.
Wanga noted that the improved facilities will improve service delivery and reduce the high rates of maternal mortalities previously associated with the hospital.
“Once we do all these, the onus is now on the staff and the medics of this hospital to now also improve on the services they give,” said Wanga.
She added, “We want our women to call this their home and look no further than here when they want to deliver.”
According to the County Executive Committee Member for Health, Hon. Roselyn Omollo, the new and improved maternity wing is a significant milestone in Homa Bay’s healthcare system. She believes that it will encourage expectant mothers to seek quality medical care.
“The newly refurbished maternity wing with two fully equipped theatre rooms, modernized labour and recovery rooms, and more beds will provide a conducive environment for both mothers and newborns,” Omollo said.
The governor reiterated her commitment to investing in other facilities within the county and urged the hospital staff to improve their services continually.
“The investment already pumped into the county’s biggest hospital needs to be replicated elsewhere,” she said.
The new maternity wing has received positive feedback from patients who have already utilized the facilities. The upgraded amenities, including the increased bed capacity and theatre rooms, provide much-needed relief for expectant mothers in the region.
HCTRH serves as a referral hospital for several neighboring counties, and the renovation of the maternity wing is expected to improve healthcare services for women in the region.
The hospital board also hosted a cake-cutting party to honor the hospital staff for their heroic efforts in saving lives following a recent road accident at Kanyadhiang’ along the Homa Bay-Kisumu highway.
The official opening of the new-look facility is a significant milestone for the Homa Bay County healthcare system.
The county government remains committed to providing quality healthcare services to its citizens and hopes to replicate the success of the refurbished maternity wing in other healthcare facilities throughout the region.
